Join The Contender Asia – Final

30 Mar

by (2008-03-30)

Singapore’s beautiful Indoor Stadium, the pride of the Lion City, will be the venue for the final of The Contender Asia.
Speculation has been rife over the last couple of weeks as to where the final would be held – Las Vegas, Macau or the Lion City itself. After Singapore was awarded the rights for the 2010 Youth Olympics, negotiations were made to hold the final in Singapore to further promote Singapore as one of the worlds most outstanding sporting and tourist countries. Therefore the final of the Contender Asia must and will be held in Singapore itself.
Asia is in Contender fever – the show has become a hit in 23 Asian countries where every Wednesday night millions and millions of people watch the show to follow the dreams of these 16 outstanding athletes. After every show the audience in each country vote to decide who will be given the chance of a rematch and who will be back for the final.
All this is leading to an unforgettable finale involving US$250,000 prize money and deciding who will be the Ultimate Contender and WMC World Champion.

El Nino Dominates At Strikeforce/EliteXC

30 Mar

by FTX (2008-03-30)

Saturday Night at the Strikeforce/EliteXC event in San Jose, California, Gilbert Melendez turned in one of the most impressive performances of the evening.Although heavily favored from the outset, El Nino did nothing but impress. From the get go it was a very one sided affair, with Melendez inflicting damage upon his opponent at will. The first round saw Gilbert landing strikes standing, and then taking his opponent to the mat where he inflicted a tortuous ground and pound assault.El Nino almost finished the fight in the first, as his opponent was saved from a Melendez flurry by the bell.
The second round was much the same, as Gilbert attacked on the feet, secured the takedown, and punished his opponent on the ground until the fight was called at the 2:18 mark.An impressive performance, from one of the world’s best lightweight fighters.I will be very interesting to see what is next for Gil.From everyone at Fairtex, congratulations Gilbert!
In other action on the card, Fairtex sponsored fighter “Smokin’” Joey Villasenor defeated Ryan Jensen by brutal KO in the first.Villasenor thoroughly controlled the fight, and showed the crowd in San Jose why his nickname is “Smokin’”.Congrats Joey!Check YouTube and for a hilarious pre-fight interview with Joey and his trainer Greg Jackson.
The event was also originally scheduled to include a title fight between Jake Shields and Drew Fickett.Unfortunately Shields was forced to withdraw due to injury, the fight has been re-scheduled for June 14th.

Tough Night In Vegas

29 Mar

by FTX (2008-03-29)

Tim Mckenzie’s return to the WEC took an unexpected turn Wednesday night, when he lost to Steve Cantwell via submission in the first round.Although obviously disappointed, Mckenzie vowed to return soon.He will be back at Fairtex following a brief week off.Tim will continue his rigorous training under Ganyao Fairtex when he returns.Often times setbacks can offer the best learning experiences, and be catalysts for explosive growth in a fighter’s career. We expect that this will be the case for Tim, and we are looking forward to seeing our friend back at the gym.The Wrecking Machine has a bright future ahead of him.

Russian Crusher Wins!

28 Mar

by FTX (2008-03-28)

In a performance that can only be described as complete domination, Alex Serdyukov made his return to the WEC cage and took home a win.Fairtex’s Russian Crusher was able to end the fight with a triangle choke at just 1:35 of the first round.Alex’s opponent came out swinging, but it was Alex who would land the better of the strikes. As the fight moved to the ground, Alex quickly worked to set up the choke, and forced a quick tapout.A completely unscathed Serdyukov wanted to fight again immediately following the bout. He’ll be ready for whatever the WEC throws his way next.Alex is ready to march to the top.He was accompanied in Las Vegas by his trainer Jongsanan Fairtex, and wrestling coaches Josh Mcdonald, and Mark Munoz.Keep an eye out for Alex’s fight on the Versus network. For more information visit
From everyone at Fairtex, congratulations Alex!

Vegas Results & Pics

27 Mar

by (2008-03-27)

The inaugural XFA ( event at the Las Vegas Hilton last night was very impressive and with all the fighters throwing down, the XFA definately lived up to its billing as a “stand up, knock ’em down or knock ’em out” event. The XFA: Xtreme Fighting Association is a full contact stand up fighting organization produced & promoted by Reis Sports Entertainment.
The who’s who of Las Vegas MMA community was in attendance and included Vanderlei Silva, Mike Pyle, Jay Hieron, John Alessio, Gina Carano, Kim Couture, Ken Hahn, Shawn Tompkins, Chris Hordecki, Scott Bieri, Gilbert Yvel, Heath Herring & Frank Trigg. Lisa King from Fight Girls & Ring Girls and Gary Alexander from The MMA Show were the commentators of the event and Alexander performed all of the post-fight interviews.
I had the pleasure of sitting in front of Mike Pyle and he gave the best comedic play by play I’ve ever heard. Although I can’t repeat much of what he said to our PG-rated crowd, let’s just say Pyle had everyone around him cracking up and should seriously be a stand up comedian when his fight career is over. Anyway, onto the fights…
The main event of the fight featured The Ultimate Fighter alum, Mike Whitehead, who was cornered by Shawn Tompkins, Heath Herring and Vanderlei Silva, vs Ethen Cox. Known primarily for his wrestling in the MMA world, Whitehead was very impressive with his stand up skills throwing flying knees and heavy hands. Whitehead controlled all three rounds and was victorious via unanimous decision.

Kaew Wins At Lumpini!

13 Mar

by FTX – photos by Rob Cox (2008-03-13)

This week Kaew Fairtex defeated the heavily favored Pansak by KO, at Lumpini stadium in Bangkok. At the time of this posting there was not an official write up for the event. However, Rob Cox of Muaythai2000 was able to provide these photos of Kaew’s impressive KO win.
Apparently going into this fight the consensus of the crowd had been that Pansak would be too tough for the young Fairtex phenom to handle. However, the audience severely underestimated the talents of Kaew as he was able to not only win, but knock out Pansak completely unconscious.
Recently Kaew has supplemented his Muay Thai training at Fairtex, by working and competing with the Thai National Boxing team. The experience Kaew has gained working with the National team has greatly benefited his punching technique and footwork.Kaew has become dangerous and elusive in the ring, as he is able to mix is strategy between traditional Muay Thai, and that of western boxing.
From everyone at Fairtex, congratulations Kaew!
