After a busy competition schedule during the first six months of 2010, Adrian Pang took some time away from fighting during the second half of the year, using the time to work on his growing carpentry business and marry his longtime partner Melina – a lady he describes as “very supportive and understanding” when it comes to his MMA career. But even during his time away from the Legend ring, Pang has continued his notoriously brutal training regimen, knowing that a title defense was just around the corner in 2011. And with his challenger announced as Korea’s Nam Yui Chul – an opponent Pang battled to a hard-fought draw at Legend 1 – Pang sees an opportunity to make a statement by beating Korea’s best lightweight.

“Nam and my first battle was epic, and I’m excited about this rematch,” Pang states. “I look forward to showcasing my skills again for the audience in Hong Kong. Obviously, it’s a huge fight for me – a rematch against one of the toughest Asian lightweights and a title defense. But I’m ready for whatever Nam brings to the ring. Our first fight was incredibly close, and I’m expecting him to bring an even higher standard to our rematch, so I’m preparing for what I think could be the hardest fight of my life.”

Although Pang is known for his modesty when it comes to discussing his fighting career, he is clearly proud of being the first Australian to headline a US Pay-Per-View MMA broadcast: “It’s awesome! I plan to put on a real show for the US audience, and I expect that Nam has the same plan. I feel like we’re ambassadors for Asian MMA. Asia has a lot of untapped talent, and I feel like given the opportunity, the fighters from this region can be just as competitive as the guys coming out of more established MMA markets.”

In his last outing, Pang took the Legend Lightweight Championship by beating Nam’s teammate Yu Woo Sung in an exciting three-round war (see video). And in his mind, the outcome of his upcoming title defense isn’t in doubt: “I plan to hold the Legend title for a long, long time.”

Fairtex BJJ instructor Romulo Melo has just returned from Brazil where he attended a ceremony at Gracie Tijuca and received the first stripe on his black belt. Romulo began his Jiu Jitsu training at the Gracie Tijuca Academy when he was twelve years old. He earned his black belt there under Vinni Aieta and Royler Gracie three years ago. Since then Romulo has taught Jiu Jitsu in the United States, and begun his professional MMA career. Romulo is currently undefeated in his pro career, having earned a 4-0 MMA record. It was a sweet home coming to Gracie Tijuca for this belt ceremony. Romulo was greeted by the entire academy, and all the representative black belts. Vinni Aieta presided over the ceremony, and applied the first strip to Romulo’ Black Belt.

Having returned to the US, Romulo is again teaching Jiu Jitsu at the Fairtex Muaythai Fitness gym in San Francisco. He is preparing for Abu Dhabi trails later this month, and training full time for his first MMA bout of 2011. From everyone at Fairtex, Congratulations Romulo Melo! It’s great to have you back at the gym, and we are excited to witness your success in this new year.
